World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like crit chance and PvE Damage.

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the current level of the item. The cost increases with the item's level.
Components
Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons to provide them with a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them; the item must be at the very least upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be inserted. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.
A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it is used on (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players to make stronger versions of the equipment with fewer Upgrade Crystals than are required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.
A boost upgrade is a way to alter the defense or attack characteristics of a weapon or armor. You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain gathering tools that are unlimited-use and also through Faction Crypt raids. When item upgrades upgrades an item, the base item is replaced with a new item of the same type. The same armor will be upgraded to an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item comes with its own set of bonuses. This could be a drawback because it can cause the item to become more expensive if you don't require it.
Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough tokens in order to do this. The item will be replaced by the same item, but it has a level 1 basis and completely different bonuses. This can be beneficial however it shouldn't be done often as it could waste resources.
Some upgrades can increase their value, allowing players to customize their gear. item upgrading is a good example, as it provides a buff if the player continuously enters or exits the water. This item can be upgraded many times and increases the maximum roll each time by 10 increments. This item is very useful in PvP. A properly rolled version can be worth up to 50x the value of its non-upgraded counterpart.
Requirements
The upgrader for items allows players to raise the level of their equipment (armor, weapons trinkets, and armor) above ilvl385 by presenting the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades to armor set pieces improve the strength of their base defense and upgrades to weapon items increase the damage they deal and also increase their strength and dexterity.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item are based on its rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium items is equal to the base value of the upgrade--for instance, a typical equipment item could have five upgrades with a cost of 25600 Technology Points 4x Quality Improvement Opportunity. Hero quality items have a lower cost per upgrade.
Premium items may have different upgrade requirements from regular gear. For example they may require fewer sowels, but more minerals and orons.
